WATCH JOURNALIST

Whether it’s a trackside chronograph, timing a tyre change, or a stopwatch-equipped pilot’s piece waiting in the literal wings as a reserve instrument, speed and timekeeping are synonymous with one another. And as Britain has historically been a force of nature in both racing and aviation, it’s no surprise that British watch brands have followed suit, with chronographs ranging from classic racing colours to the kind of dark palettes taken from serious modern performance.

BROOKLANDS TRIPLE-FOUR SPECTRUM II

BROOKLANDS TRIPLE-FOUR SPECTRUM II

Not only does Brooklands share their name with a legendary race track, their signature model – the Triple-Four – is directly inspired by the record-breaking 1933 Napier-Railton. Granted the modern brand is different to the track’s original 1/1,000th second chronograph built in 1907, but with its less-is-more, vertical bi-compax layout it feels like the proper, lovingly designed heritage racer it is. The latest edition, the Triple-Four Spectrum II, even opts for a panda colourway, synonymous in chronograph circles with classic racing.

Aera C1-Cloud

Aera C1-Cloud

A very different take on the chronograph, Aera’s C1-Cloud is anything but vintage. It’s all smooth curves and minimalism in the stopwatch equivalent of a Zen garden. Tonal white and light blues come across as calming more than icy and the pebble-smooth bezel opts for tactile over tachymeter. It still has the specs of a solid trackside stopwatch, backed by the Sellita SW510, but you’d be better off pairing it with a long, languorous road trip along a particularly sunny coastline.

Bamford London B347

Bamford London B347

Bamford’s B347 Predator is sharp, faceted and aggressive in dark, performance-led forged carbon. It’s light, it’s fast and it’s not for the faint-hearted, like a custom hypercar performance kit. It’s also, unusually, a monopusher. Granted they’re normally seen in more vintage pieces than modern racing monsters like this, but they’re always fun to see. Equipped with an inner-bezel tachymeter, this is as much a signal that you’re into horsepower as a Lamborghini poster on your wall.

Diatom Blue Dot

Diatom Blue Dot

Space might conjure images of sedately floating in zero G, but to get there you need to put on a serious turn of speed powered by over 1,000 tons of propellant. But it’s also a level of speed that Diatom watches are built to withstand. While the remaining edition of their signature Blue Dot lacks the meteorite the British brand is best known for, its more restrained look is still elevated by a sliver of the ancient iron-nickel alloy at 12 o’clock. Otherwise, it’s a sleek, elegant chronograph in the colour of our very own blue marble.

Farer Racing Chronograph

Farer Racing Chronograph

Racing liveries are all about colour; so is Farer. The Farer Racing Chronograph is therefore a no-brainer. The Libre edition – named after a mixed-class race dating back to the 1920s – is more on the classic side of things, with a beautiful mix of light cream, burgundy and light blue, a slim non-Tachymeter, 12-hour bezel and vintage-style pushers. The 30-minute big-eye subdial at 3 o’clock is split into three different shades because this is Farer; since when has three colours been enough? The result is one of the most handsome British chronographs on the market.

Geckota Chronotimer

Geckota Chronotimer

As accessible as they are colourful, Geckota’s line-up is pretty reflective of British watches as a whole, but the Chronotimer doubles down on both elements. A jade green dial paired with an orange and white segmented and squared 3 o’clock big-eye subdial revs an otherwise elegant, 1930s-inspried design into something much more fun. The orange second hand is a welcome flash of colour too, but it’s actually the matching colour of the 2 o’clock chronograph pusher barrel that’s a standout. For less than £500, this is a seriously tempting impulse buy.

Helicon Professional Chronograph

Helicon Professional Chronograph

It’s not just cars that can make good use of a chronograph. In fact, you could argue that for emergency services, where a second is the difference between life and death, it’s even more important. The Helicon Professional Chronograph is the emergency service-focused brand’s answer to that call. While the sold-out Ion Yellow edition is the one for an intense sea rescue, the in-stock Stratos Blue is hard not to love. Paired with a grey, imitation ghost bezel and striking black subdials, it’s equipped with a mecha-quartz movement for the accuracy of quartz with the smooth sweep of a mechanical chronograph hand. For £400 there’s a distinct lack of compromise here.

Isotope Chronograph Moonshot Thunderclap

Isotope Chronograph Moonshot Thunderclap

Isotope’s Moonshot should get much more recognition than it does. It’s one of the weirdest and therefore unique chronographs out there, with disc subdials set into a rounded titanium case and anodised pushers on a sloped crown guard. The shape is about more than aesthetics however as it actually makes the chronograph incredibly satisfying to use. This collaboration with artist Teenage Grandpa (Matt Smith-Johnson) is a little bit different however. Dubbed the Thunderclap, it’s equipped with a telemeter which unlike a tachymeter, which measures speed, it measures distance when you know a distance and speed. Like, for example, when you see lightning and time when you hear the thunderclap.

Nomadic Céad 126

Nomadic Céad 126

Nomadic’s first chronograph is just as rooted in Belfast history as their signature dive watches and the Navigator White edition translates that heritage into a classic Panda dial. There are actually two sides to the Céad 126’s nods to Belfast’s motoring connections. The first is in bikes, as Nomadic ambassador Glenn Irwin set a 126mph lap speed record at the North West 200. The second is DeLorean, the doomed-yet-iconic car brand founded in the city. And to any film fans out there, I really hope I don’t need to explain why the number 88 is highlighted on the tachymeter…

Prestex Valjoux 7750

Prestex Valjoux 7750

After making a name for themselves with the exceptionally well-priced Verimatic line, Prestex have taken the plunge into more premium movements with the Valjoux 7750 which houses a, well, Valjoux 7750 chronograph. This is a serious upgrade to the usual Sellita number and a big flex for Prestex as a brand, with an uptick in price to match. Though honestly, the movement’s not what’s most striking about this particular watch. Available in two colours, the yellow is a particular highlight in more ways than one – and at 43mm across, there’s no missing this on your wrist.

Rotary Sport Chronograph

Rotary Sport Chronograph

Sometimes you just want a handsome, affordable chronograph that won’t look out of place on a track day. Well, Rotary has you covered. For (currently) just under £150, you get a dial in glossy British Racing Green, classic Daytona-esque ringed subdials and a steel tachymeter bezel. Yes, it’s quartz, but at this price anything else would be too good to be true. Hell, it even has screw-down crowns.

Zero West AV1 Vulcan

Zero West AV1 Vulcan

Speed is everything for the engineering madmen at Zero West, whether that’s in the sky or on the track. While their racing editions are currently all sold out (I’m sure there’s a new one coming soon), their AV1 Vulcan has all the in-built velocity of its namesake Cold War bomber. In fact, as is generally the case with Zero West, the watch includes aluminium from a specific Avro Vulcan that served in the Falklands. Echoing the stark white-on-black of cockpit instruments and printed with airspeed indicator cues, it’s a pilots’ chronograph that’s more intrinsically linked to military history than nearly any other.
